GAME
9: MINNESOTA 11, NEW YORK 10
| Markus Quinn scored twice for NYU against Minnesota TUCSON, ARIZONA - To quote famed Yankee catcher/broadcaster Yogi Berra, "It ain't over til it's over". For the University of Minnesota and New York University men's water polo teams, it took an extra 58 seconds to decide which team was the victor as the Gophers scored two goals to outlast the Violets 11-10 at the National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona. The teams exited the pool believing that NYU was the victor as the Violets Markus Quinn (So., Somers, NY) scored with three seconds left on the clock to give New York an apparent 11-10 victory. However, a protest was filed following the game for a correctable error regarding ejections forcing the two teams back into the pool following the conclusion of Game 10 (Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech) to decide the final victor. It took Minnesota eight seconds to ring up the go-ahead score as Robert Pesun (Gr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) lobbed a shot into the cage for a 10-9 lead. NYU answered right back with 31 seconds left when Elliott Bishow (Sr., Eugene, OR) ripped a blast into the twine to retie the score. The game appeared headed to overtime until John Hoedeman (Gr., Los Angeles, CA) made his third goal of the game count the most unleashing a desperation heave which sailed into the cage as the final horn sounded to end the game and give the Gophers an 11-10 victory. Pesun led Minnesota in scoring with four goals, while Hoedeman chipped in a hat-trick and Don Kim (Gr., Los Angeles, CA) and Cyrus Jamnejad (Gr., Los Angeles, CA) tacked on pairs of goals. For NYU, David Myre (Gr., Mercer Island, WA) registered a hat-trick to key the Violets' offense. Quinn, Chris McClure (Gr., Grimsby, Ontario, Canada) and John Barnett (Sr., Ocoee, FL) tacked on pairs of goals to go along with Bishow's solo score. Minnesota advances to face either Arizona State or Oregon at 4:00 p.m. on November 10, while NYU will take on the loser of the ASU-Oregon game at 1:40 p.m.
