Harris, who was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, took over the game in the extra period scoring with 1:06 left in the first three minute overtime period on an exclusion chance to give Cal Poly a 6-5 lead. He added to the margin and netted the game-winner with 1:50 left in the second OT drilling a shot inside the far post for a 7-5 lead. Michigan State attempted to rally in the final minutes as Jon Haga (Sr., Palatine, IL) scored on an exclusion with 1:18 left on the clock, but the Mustangs' defense held off the rally to preserve the national championship. The game had all the makings of a national championship game as it featured two of the three teams ranked #1 in the nation during the 2007 season and saw breakout performances by Harris, Haga, Evan Perry (Jr., Rockford, MI) and Ryan Smillie (Sr., San Jose, CA). Cal Poly took the early lead in the game as Harris and Smillie scored with 6:39 and 5:23 left in the first period to post the Mustangs to a 2-0 lead, but the Spartans charged back behind goals by Perry and Haga at 4:11 and 3:19, respectively, to tie the game after seven minutes of play. Michigan State went ahead in the second period when Haga drilled a shot near post for a 3-2 lead with 5:44 left in the first half as the Spartans carried the lead into halftime. The lead grew to 4-2 65 seconds into the second half when Haga buried his third goal of the game for a 4-2 lead, but the Mustangs raced back into the game on back-to-back goals by Smillie at the 5:39 and 4:58 marks to knot the game at 4-4 entering the fourth period. In the fourth, Cal Poly took the lead at 5-4 on a give-and-go goal by Smillie with 1:14 to play, but the Spartans refused to lose as Perry blasted a shot with 37 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 5-5, bring on overtime and setup Harris' heroics. A key to the Mustangs' title was in goal as Casey Ryan (So., Belmont, CA) made eight saves, including two in overtime, to earn the win. Michigan State's Ben Shantz (Fr., Rockford, MI) blocked away nine shots. Following the game, Cal Poly head coach Matt Landre was named the Coach of the Year as he guided the Mustangs to their first national title since 2004 when the team knocked off the University of Arizona. Overall, Cal Poly has won five national titles (1999, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007) and advanced to the title game six times (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007). The title game marked Michigan State's third straight after falling to Grand Valley State in 2005 and capturing the 2006 National Title. In addition, it marked MSU's fourth national title game appearance as the Spartans also captured the 2000 title.
