Game 27– University of Arizona vs. California Polytechnic State University
Daniel Harris scored twice in the fourth period to rally the California Polytechnic State University Mustangs from a 4-4 tie at the end of the third period and to an 8-6 win over the University of Arizona in the third place game at the 2006 National Collegiate Club Championship Tournament hosted by Miami University (OH).
Knotted at four with seven minutes to play, the Mustangs jumped out of the gate strong in the final period of play as Trent Kloppenburg beat his defender and Arizona goalie Remington Franklin to a 5-4 lead 27 seconds into the period. Harris added to the margin 61 seconds later as he slipped behind the Wildcats' defense and deposited a shot into the net for a 6-4 advantage.
Arizona player/coach Eric Qualls responded for Arizona with a blast at 5:07, but Harris finished off a natural hat-trick by racing through the defense, pumping the ball and pounding a shot into the upper left corner of the cage to regain a two goal lead at 7-5 and net the eventual game winner.
The Wildcats roared back as Tony Schultz scored at 3:39, but Cal Poly's Bobby Erzen sealed the game by scoring at 1:56 for the 8-6 final.
In goal, Franklin made eight saves for Arizona in the loss, while Mark Horner notched the win for the Mustangs stopping six shots as Cal Poly concludes the tournament 3-1.
The game was a battle of scoring runs as Cal Poly took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a man advantage goal by Ryan Smillie at the 3:29 mark.
Qualls answered for Arizona at 5:04 and 3:04 with man advantage and even strength goals, respecitively, to put the Wildcats ahead 2-1. Arizona added to the lead before halftime as David Brookbank notched a goal at 2:03 for a 3-1 Wildcats advantage at the break.
The margin grew to three goals to open the third period as Todd Carpenter scored at 6:27 for Arizona, but Cal Poly rallied as Josh Mix (3:23, 00:32) and Harris combined for three goals to knot the game at 4-4 entering the climatic fourth period.
Arizona's finish marks a one spot drop from the team's 2005 finale at nationals as the Wildcats downed the University of California-Los Angeles in the third place game a year ago.
