Game 16 – University of Arizona vs. University of Texas
The University of Texas scored five goals in the fourth period, but it was not enough to overcome the University of Arizona's 6-2 halftime advantage, as the Arizona Wildcats wrangled the Longhorns 9-7 at the 2006 National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Miami University (OH).
The star of the game for Arizona was goalie Remington Franklin who made eight saves for Arizona as the Wildcats will continue the tournament at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, November 18 in a showdown for a spot in the national title game versus Michigan State University.
Arizona took the lead with 5:05 left in the first period as Robert Seeley put a shot into the high right corner for a 1-0 lead. The margin increased to a deuce at the 4:09 mark as Eric Qualls converted on a man-up chance after Texas' Mitch Halquist was excluded at 4:28. Texas halved the lead at 1:50 when Michael McDonnell shook his defender and beat Franklin to pull the Longhorns to within a goal. However, Qualls countered for Arizona with 34 seconds left in the period for a 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats began to pull away in the second period as Texas' Tom Andrew scored at 4:26 to pull the Longhorns back to within a goal, but the Wildcats ripped off three goals before the end of the half courtesy an exclusion score by Qualls (2:10) and even strength tallies by Dave Jacobs (00:33) and Alex Negronida (00:00) to take a four goal advantage into the break.
Arizona pushed the lead out to five goals in the third period as Negronida netted his second score at 1:54 to set up a dramatic fourth period.
Texas and Arizona traded goals to open the period as Halquist shaved Arizona's lead to 7-3 at 6:34, but David Brookbank gave the Wildcats back a five goal lead at 8-3 27 seconds following Halquist's marker.
The Longhorns then went on the offensive scoring back-to-back exlcusion goals by Halquist (5:35) and Jeff Moltenberry (4:00), and an even strength goal by Halquist (2:28) to move within striking distance of coming back to overcome Arizona.
Arizona received some insurance with 2:08 to play as Texas' McDonnell was whistled for a penalty and Qualls converted on the ensuing penalty shot for his fourth goal of the game as the Wildcats jumped ahead 9-6.
Texas refused to roll over as Halquist netted his fourth goal of the contest with 1:57 to play to carve the lead back to a pair of goals at 9-7, but the Arizona defense and Franklin did the rest holding Texas without a shot over the final 117 seconds of play to hang on for the narrow victory.
For Texas, Jon D'Andrea registered six saves as the Longhorns will face Florida International University at 7:30 p.m. with a berth in the fifth place game at stake.
